The end of the extent of our knowledge defines the borders of our world as we know it. Since the concept of the world as a plate, right up to the discovery of the existence of dark matter, this has not changed. Where our knowledge ends, we stagger, we can not focus. Ever since, this kind of dizziness has been an inspiration tantamount to fear and fantasy, to the arts and to science. Esoteric beliefs take advantage of the unexplored, making it the new “wonders” (e.g. quantum healing). Propaganda exploits the fears of the Other, the New, the Unknown. But why must human beings find explanations for and pictures of the things they do not know or understand?Certainly for artists of all stripes, the unknown, the idea or the form or the tale that has not yet arrived, is what must be found. It is the job of artists to open doors and invite in prophesies, the unknown, the unfamiliar; it’s where their work comes from, although its arrival signals the beginning of the long disciplined process of making it their own. Scientists too, as J. HASENHERZ screening with Catherine Yass:
HASENHERZ relates to the methods Arnold Schönberg invented for his Verein für musikalische Privataufführung (Society for Private Music Performance) where works of contemporary music were introduced to an audience of musicians and music lovers. Schönberg laid down rules for his society, amongst them: the piece shall be played, then discussed with the artist and after that followed by another performance of the same piece. This ensures that on hearing or seeing an artwork a second time, one can allow it to reveal itself in another way. HASENHERZ focus on films and videos and reflect the ongoing research progress. The discussion in between the screenings will consist of current questions concerning artistic research.
